Understand Your Results

What Does My Radon Results Mean?

Radon is measured in picocuries per liter (pCi/L).

Radon level
What it Means?
Less than 2 pCi/L Continue to consider periodic testing.
2–4 pCi/L Consider taking steps to reduce radon, particularly if levels remain elevated.
4 pCi/L or higher EPA recommends taking action to reduce radon.

Is Any Level of Radon Safe?

There is no known completely safe level of radon exposure. The risk of lung cancer increases as radon levels and the length of exposure increase. The EPA recommends taking action when the radon level is 4 pCi/L or higher and recommends considering action when levels are between 2 and 4 pCi/L.

What If My Result Is 4 pCi/L or Higher?

Don’t panic. Elevated radon levels can often be reduced. You may want to:

  1. Review your test results and make sure the test was conducted properly.
  2. Conduct additional testing as appropriate.
  3. Contact a qualified radon professional for assistance.
  4. Consider installing a radon mitigation system.

Keep Your Results

Keep a copy of your radon test results with your home or building records. If you sell your home, future owners may benefit from knowing the building’s radon history.
