Radon Testing

Why Should I Test for Radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas that cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. Testing is the only way to know if elevated radon is present in your home or building. Radon can be found in any home or building, regardless of age, construction, or location.

How Is Radon Tested?

Radon testing is simple. A radon test device is placed in an appropriate area of the building for a specified period of time. The device is then returned for analysis. There are two general types of radon tests:

  • Short Term Tests – Short-term tests measure radon for a period of 2 to 90 days, depending on the type of test.
  • Long Term Tests – Long-term tests measure radon for more than 90 days and can provide a better picture of the average radon level over a longer period.

Where Should I Test?

Testing should generally be conducted in the lowest level of the building that is regularly occupied or could reasonably be occupied.

Avoid placing a test:

  • In a bathroom or kitchen
  • In direct sunlight
  • Near drafts, doors, windows, or ventilation equipment
  • In areas of excessive heat or humidity
  • Where it may be disturbed
