Huntington, WV – The Cabell-Huntington Health Department has recently received a grant from the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). With the funds, the department provided Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) training, course materials, and testing for twenty healthcare staff representing nine long-term care and nursing facilities in Cabell County.
Mikaela Earl, Cabell-Huntington Health Department Director of Epidemiology, said, “The CIC credential is a nationally recognized certification that signifies demonstrated expertise in infection prevention, control practices, and healthcare epidemiology. Supporting our frontline healthcare workers in achieving this certification is not only an investment in their professional development but also a strategic step toward improving patient outcomes, reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), and enhancing overall safety in vulnerable care environments.”
According to Earl, “The goal of the program is to empower local staff with the knowledge and credentials needed to lead infection control efforts in their facilities. The program enhances the health infrastructure of our community, particularly in long-term care settings, where residents are at a higher risk of infection. The impact of this training extends beyond individual facilities, contributing to a healthier, safer, and more resilient community for all.” These healthcare staff members will take the CIC exam in August.
