AmeriCorps Service Opportunity
Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department (MOVHD) AmeriCorps Members will serve as WV Community Health AmeriCorps Developer’s (WVCHAD) in communities throughout WV including Cabell County. Members will serve individuals, families and groups to address their Health Education, nutritional and physical needs along with offering training in disaster services. Members will provide a wide variety of direct services related to these areas.  
MOVHD will engage twelve AmeriCorps Members to serve from October 2016, through August 2017. The Cabell-Huntington Health Department is looking for individuals to provide quarter time and minimum time service. The AmeriCorps Members will be a representative of the health department in the field of Health and Wellness, Clinical and Disaster Services. All aspects of this field will be the responsibility of the AmeriCorps Members.

Full Time Service Opportunity

  • Total of 1700 hours in 1 year
  • Flexible schedule to include day, evening or weekend shifts
  • Living allowance provided- $12,800
  • Possible eligibility for health care and child care assistance
  • May qualify for education award or payment on government student loans at completion of service-$5,775

Part Time Service Opportunity

  • Total of 900 hours over an 12 month period or less
  • Flexible schedule to include day, evening or weekend shifts
  • Living allowance provided-$6,870
  • May qualify for education award or payment on government student loans at completion of service-$2,887.50

Reduced Part Time Service Opportunity

  • Total of 675 hours over an 12 month period or less
  • Flexible schedule to include day, evening or weekend shifts
  • Living allowance provided-$5,170
  • May qualify for education award or payment on government student loans at completion of service-$2,199.92

Quarter Time Service Opportunity

  • Total of 450 hours over an 12 month period or less
  • Flexible schedule to include day, evening or weekend shifts
  • Living allowance provided-$3,400
  • May qualify for education award or payment on government student loans at completion of service-$1,527.45

Minimum Time Service Opportunity

  • Total of 300 hours over an 12 month period or less
  • Flexible schedule to include day, evening or weekend shifts
  • Living allowance provided-$2,266
  • May qualify for education award or payment on government student loans at completion of service-$1,221.96

Healthy Futures


Chronic Disease Programs

  • Under the supervision of the Cabell-Huntington Health Department’s Director of Health & Wellness.
  • Obtain certification in Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP), Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) and Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) within the first few months of enrollment.
  • Recruit a minimum of 1 group per month to attend chronic disease programs by collaborating with faith based organizations, boards of education, rehab facilities, assisted living/nursing homes and businesses.
  • Present 10 CDSMP/DSMP and 4 DPP classes to at risk populations throughout Cabell County within year one.
  • Meet with medical providers to explain prevention programs offered and garner support by December 2016.
  • Attend additional trainings as assigned to gain or increase proficiency in chronic disease education.
  • Provide preventative education on the following; weight management, tobacco and obesity
  • Service will include travel throughout Cabell County and trainings as assigned.

Clinic

  • Under the supervision of the Cabell-Huntington Health Department’s Director of Nursing.
  • Strengthen knowledge base of sexually transmitted diseases, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, harm reduction program and HIV within 1 month of enrollment.
  • Implement CDC recognized programs to educate the community on the importance of adopting behaviors to support good sexual choices.
  • Strengthen the use of resources that offer friendly and non-judgmental services to community members.
  • Obtain certification in Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP), Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) and Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) within the first few months of enrollment.
  • Service will include travel throughout Cabell County and trainings as assigned.

Disaster Services

  • Under the supervision of the Cabell-Huntington Health Department’s Sanitarian Supervisor.
  • Become familiar with and attend training to understand the function of the Medical Reserve Corps within in 1 month of enrollment.
  • Recruit 19 people to sign up for Medical Reserve Corps
  • Prepare and deliver an emergency preparedness presentation to a minimum of 40 local organizations.
  • Give talks and demonstrations at health fairs and other community events on preparedness as assigned.
  • Research and prepare educational materials about the operations of a pet shelter, fire safety and family preparedness.
  • Service will include travel throughout Cabell County and trainings as assigned.
